This elegant medallion is a modern reissue paying tribute to the iconic coinage of Ephesus, one of the foremost cities of ancient Ionia, renowned for its Temple of Artemis—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The obverse presents a majestic stag, kneeling beside a stylized date palm, with the Greek inscription "ΔΗΜΑΓΟΡΗΣ" (Demagoras), possibly referencing a magistrate or issuing authority. The stag, sacred to Artemis, emphasizes the city’s religious identity and its deep reverence for nature and wildlife, while the palm tree alludes to the region’s fertility and the cultic symbolism associated with divine groves. The reverse features a meticulously rendered honeybee, flanked by the Greek letters "Ε" and "Φ", signifying Ephesus. In ancient Ephesian coinage, the bee served not only as a civic emblem but also as a sacred symbol of Artemis Ephesia, whose priestesses were known as "melissae" (bees). The symmetrical, near-geometric composition, surrounded by a beaded border, showcases the artistic precision of classical numismatic design. This piece is an evocative homage to one of antiquity’s most spiritually and economically influential cities, offering collectors a window into the rich symbolism and cultural significance of Ionian coinage.
