This unusual and historically evocative spintria token features on one side an erotic scene depicting a couple engaged in intimate activity, a motif not uncommon among privately circulated Roman tokens of the 1st century CE. These tokens, often referred to as spintriae, are believed to have been used in specific, possibly restricted, environments such as bathhouses or brothels, although their exact purpose remains debated among scholars. The craftsmanship of the scene, engraved with symbolic intimacy rather than vulgarity, reflects the Romans’ frank approach to human sensuality and the human body.
The reverse side is marked with the Roman numeral III, encircled by a laurel wreath—an element often associated with rank, value, or category. While this piece is a modern reproduction, it faithfully captures the intrigue and rarity of these controversial and enigmatic artifacts. Spintriae tokens are prized among collectors of Roman curiosities not only for their artistic boldness but for the mystery surrounding their use and circulation within Imperial society.
