This intriguing piece is a modern reproduction of an ancient Roman spintria, a token believed to have served either as a brothel admission marker or a gaming piece during the early Imperial period. The obverse depicts an explicit erotic scene rendered in classical style, showing two nude figures engaged in intercourse amidst draped curtains. The composition captures not only the uninhibited sensuality of Roman society but also its craftsmanship in miniature art. Beneath the figures is the number “VI”, denoting this piece as part of a broader numbered series, which scholars have catalogued according to known erotic motifs.
The reverse side features the Roman numeral VI enclosed within a laurel wreath—a design often associated with Roman victory, prestige, or official validation. These types of tokens, known today as spintriae, were never used as legal currency but circulated privately, their exact purpose still a topic of scholarly debate. This item, though a modern replica, reflects a bold and fascinating intersection of ancient Roman art, sexuality, and social customs, offering collectors and historians alike a window into Rome’s less-discussed cultural layers.
