This imposing medallion is a faithful modern reissue inspired by the coinage of the Sasanian Empire, specifically under the reign of Khosrow II (590–628 CE), one of the most powerful and emblematic rulers of late antiquity. The obverse features a highly stylized frontal portrait of Khosrow II, adorned with a distinctive winged crown topped by a crescent and orb—a potent symbol of divine kingship and Zoroastrian cosmology. The beaded border and Pahlavi inscriptions enhance the historical fidelity of the piece, reflecting the sophisticated statecraft and centralized ideology of the late Sasanian state, which stood as the last great Persian empire before the rise of Islam. On the reverse, the medallion presents a striking image of the Zoroastrian fire altar, flanked by two attendants. Above, astral symbols including crescent and star motifs emphasize the cosmic authority of the Sasanian monarch, believed to rule by the favor of Ahura Mazda, the supreme deity of Zoroastrianism. The sacred fire, representing purity and divine order, was central to Sasanian religious and royal ideology. This medallion, although not an original minting from the period, provides collectors with a powerful visual encapsulation of imperial Iranian identity, theology, and royal iconography during one of the most artistically and politically sophisticated eras of the ancient world.
