This compelling medallion is a modern reissue based on the coinage of ancient Syracuse, one of the most influential Greek city-states in Magna Graecia. The reverse presents a dynamic depiction of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, drawing her bow, accompanied by a loyal hound. Her stance captures the essence of readiness and divine authority over nature. The vertical Greek legend "ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ" identifies the issuing city, underscoring the prominence of Syracuse as a cultural and military power in the classical Mediterranean world. The motif reflects the deep religious connection the Syracusans had with their protective deities, particularly Artemis, whose presence in civic iconography emphasized order, protection, and prosperity.
The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Hermes, identifiable by his petasos (winged hat) and flowing curls. As the messenger of the gods and protector of travelers, merchants, and athletes, Hermes symbolized mobility, communication, and commerce—qualities essential to Syracuse’s thriving maritime economy. His depiction on coinage was a declaration of the city’s strategic and economic aspirations, serving both a mythological and political function. This reissue faithfully preserves the aesthetic and ideological balance of ancient Sicilian numismatics, offering a vivid reflection of the artistic excellence and religious values of one of the Hellenic world’s most sophisticated urban centers.
